Dear Tom:
By chance I came across this link. I have continued to research Afghan civilians killed by US and NATO actions. I keep an up-to-date website, The Afghan Victim Memorial Project, at http//pubpages.unh.edu/~mwherold. I'd be happy also to send you a chart with the overall figures for October 7, 2001 - April 19, 2009. You may be interested in my most recent essay, "America Afghan war," published in India's Frontline weekly magazine at http://www.hinduonnet.com/fline/stories/20090508260904400.htm

Tom, are you making the assumption that an American life is equivalent in value to that of an Afghani live? I would guess that according to American foreign policy, the revealed preference of American citizens (even though they'll never admit it) by public opinion polls is probably more like 1 for every 100 or 1,000 lives of non-western peoples. (Senators or CEOs sons are worth even more!)

It was the same for white settlers when "civilized" Americans did a cost benefit analysis with the lives of displaced American Indians when considering their manifest destiny. Today, missing Caucasian girls from the suburbs seem to be more valuable than missing Children of Color as well (at least according to the media ratings). Some calculations unfortunately haven't changed much since Roman times.
